National Consumer Protection Week

Looking to protect yourself from fraud, identity theft, and scams? Maybe you’re wondering about the best way to use credit, or how to shop for a used car, while maximizing your security online.

National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) is a time to help people understand their consumer rights and make well-informed decisions about money. At Bank of the West, we continue to share education on varying topics to encourage data protection and awareness.

Protect yourself:

On Social Media:

  • Be careful what you share -keep personal information limited
  • Update and maintain your privacy settings

When Surfing and Purchasing:

  • Make sure your internet connection is secure
  • Make online purchases from secure sites
  • Enable multi-factor authentication, especially for your critical financial and communications accounts (banking, e-mail, mobile phone)

Look Out for Common Scams

  • Phone calls or messages warning you of an urgent problem with your account or asking you to confirm your password
  • Loan or financial assistance by unregulated entities or offers that seem too good to be true
  • Unsolicited e-mails from the IRS or a missing refund

On your Devices:

  • Keep antivirus programs up to date
  • Choose strong passwords – don't use the same one for multiple sites
  • Lock your devices and remotely wipe lost or stolen devices
  • Be careful what you download
  • Be careful who you meet online
  • Take advantage of sites and services that warn you if your credentials or identity have been compromised
