Debit Card Overdraft Service

Debit Card Overdraft Service applies to your account only if you opt in. The service applies to everyday debit card transactions and ATM withdrawals when you do not have a sufficient Available Balance to cover them. If you’ve opted in, Bank of the West may, at its sole discretion, pay these transactions.

If we do, your account will become overdrawn, and you’ll be charged the applicable overdraft fee. If this happens, you’re responsible for making a deposit or transfer to your account as soon as possible to bring the account to a positive balance.

Even if you opt in to the service, paying your transactions and overdrawing your account is at our discretion. There may be times when your transaction will be declined.

If you don’t opt in for Debit Card Overdraft Service, ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases generally will be declined at the ATM or point of purchase when you do not have a sufficient Available Balance to cover these transactions. However, you will not be charged an overdraft fee.

You may prefer to Opt Out to avoid paying overdraft fees by having the ATM or debit card purchase declined when you don’t have a sufficient Available Balance in your account. OR you may prefer Debit Card Overdraft Service and be willing to pay an overdraft fee, as the service may, at our discretion, help you avoid declined transactions at a store or ATM.

Standard Overdraft Practices

Our Standard Overdraft Practices applies to your account automatically, unless you choose to opt out. The Standard Overdraft Practices apply to transactions other than ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases such as automatic bill payments, recurring debit card transactions, ACH debits, and checks you write.

If you do not have a sufficient Available Balance to cover these transactions, Bank of the West may, at its sole discretion, pay the transactions. If we do, your account will be overdrawn and you'll be charged an overdraft fee. If this happens, you're responsible for making a deposit or transfer to your account as soon as possible to bring the account to a positive balance.

Even if you're opted in to our Standard Overdraft Practice, paying your transactions and overdrawing your account is at our discretion. There may be times when your transaction will be declined.

You may prefer Standard Overdraft Practices and be willing to pay an overdraft fee. Or you may prefer to Opt Out to avoid paying overdraft fees and having the items returned when you do not have a sufficient Available Balance in your account. If the items are returned, your account won't be overdrawn; however, you may be charged a returned item fee.

Opt In or Out

To manage your preferences for the Debit Card Overdraft Service, visit a branch or call us at 1-800-488-2265, TTY 800-659-5495. You can also manage Debit Card Overdraft Service preferences by signing in to Online Banking. You can opt in or opt out at any time, and your choice will become effective within two business days.

You can opt out of our Standard Overdraft Practices at any time by visiting a branch or by calling our Contact Center at 1-800-488-2265, TTY 800-659-5495. Your choice will become effective within two business days.

Special Message for Gold Line Account Holders

Gold Line is a line of credit that can be linked to your checking account for overdraft coverage. When linked, your checks, ATM transactions, and everyday debit card purchases will generally be covered up to your available credit limit even if you don't choose to opt in for the Debit Card Overdraft Service. Loan Advance Fees may apply. These benefits are subject to credit approval. Note that the Gold Line Account will not advance funds to cover fees or charges assessed by the Bank. This may result in an overdraft on your checking account. Subject to available credit, money is transferred in increments of $50 to cover transactions and any Loan Advance Fee. Conditions, fees and restrictions may apply.

Special Message for Savings Overdraft Protection Customers

When you link a savings account to your checking account for overdraft coverage, your ATM transactions and everyday debit card purchases generally won't be covered (at the time of the transaction) by a transfer from the savings account. If you've opted in to the Debit Card Overdraft Service, these transactions may be covered at our discretion as described above. Your checks, recurring debit card transactions and ACH transactions will generally be covered by your linked savings account (subject to the Available Balance in your savings account) to cover overdrafts if and when they occur. Money is transferred in increments of $50. Transactions and checks are covered only if:

  • You haven't exceeded the monthly transaction limits on your savings account, and

  • Your account balance can cover the transaction plus Savings Overdraft Transfer Fees.

  • 1 An Overdraft/Returned Item fee may be imposed when the Bank pays overdrafts on checks, in-person withdrawals, ATM transactions, Online Bill Payment, everyday Debit Card purchases, recurring debit card transactions, or automated clearinghouse transactions. In the event your account becomes overdrawn for any reason, Bank of the West expects you to pay any overdrafts immediately upon notice or demand. Whether your overdrafts will be paid is at the Bank's sole discretion. For example, we typically do not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing or if you have too many overdrafts. The Bank reserves the right to amend or terminate Debit Card Overdraft Service or Standard Overdraft Practices or your participation in Debit Card Overdraft Service or Standard Overdraft Practices without notice at any time. We will charge Overdraft/Returned Item fees for each item paid or returned up to a maximum of 4 per day (one per day in Nevada). As a courtesy, Bank of the West will not impose an Overdraft Fee on daily ending balances overdrawn by $5 or less. If your account remains overdrawn $15 or more for five (5) consecutive business days you will be charged an Extended Overdraft Fee of $30 on the sixth business day.
