We know that with today's hectic schedules it's easy to lose track of your checking account balance. Our Debit Card Overdraft Service may be able to help you avoid declined transactions at a store or ATM.
If you sign up for our Debit Card Overdraft Service1 and then make an everyday debit card transaction or ATM withdrawal without the necessary funds to cover it, Bank of the West may, at its sole discretion, allow the transaction(s) and if we do, you will be charged the applicable overdraft fee(s). Without Debit Card Overdraft Service, these types of transactions generally will be declined at the ATM or point of purchase.
Some people like the convenience of Debit Card Overdraft Service, as the service may:
- Help you avoid declined transactions at a store or ATM
- Allow access to additional funds for those "just in case" moments
Please note, our ability to cover automatic bill payments, recurring debit card transactions, ACH debits and checks you write will remain in effect and is at our discretion, even if you don't have sufficient funds in your account, or you choose to not have Debit Card Overdraft Service.
How to Manage your Debit Card Overdraft Service Preferences
To manage your Debit Card Overdraft preferences, visit a branch, call us at 1-800-488-BANK (2265), or login to Online Banking.
¹ An Overdraft/Returned Item fee may be imposed when the Bank pays overdrafts on checks, in-person withdrawals, ATM transactions, Online Bill Payment, everyday Debit Card purchases, recurring debit card transactions, or automated clearinghouse transactions. Unless you sign up for Debit Card Overdraft Service, when you have insufficient available funds in your account, ATM transactions and everyday debit card purchases will be declined and no fees will be charged. In the event your account becomes overdrawn for any reason, Bank of the West expects you to pay any overdrafts immediately upon notice or demand. Whether your overdrafts will be paid is at the Bank's sole discretion. For example, we typically do not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing or if you have too many overdrafts. The Bank reserves the right to amend or terminate Debit Card Overdraft Service or your participation in Debit Card Overdraft Service without notice at any time. The Bank's Overdraft/Returned Item Fee for the first occurrence per 12-month period is up to $31. After the first occurrence, the fee is up to $35. We will charge Overdraft/Returned Item fees for each item paid or returned up to a maximum of 4 per day. Beginning as early as the first business day following the day on which your overdraft occurred, overdrawn balances of $15 or more may be charged a Daily Overdraft Fee of up to $5 per business day. As a courtesy, Bank of the West will not impose a fee on daily ending balances overdrawn by $5 or less. Additional details are in your Schedule of Fees & Charges for Personal Accounts.
