Debit Card Overdraft Service
How Debit Card Overdraft Service Works
If you sign up for our Debit Card Overdraft Service and then make an everyday debit card transaction or ATM withdrawal without the necessary funds to cover it, Bank of the West may pay the transaction at our discretion and, if we do, you will be charged the applicable overdraft fee(s). Without Debit Card Overdraft Service, these types of transactions generally will be declined at the ATM or point of purchase.
Some people like the convenience of Debit Card Overdraft Service, as signing-up for the service may:
- Help you avoid declined transactions at a store or ATM
- Allow access to additional funds for those "just in case" moments
Please note, our ability to cover automatic bill payments, recurring debit card transactions, ACH debits and checks you write will remain in effect and is at our discretion, even if you don't have sufficient funds in your account, or you choose to not have Debit Card Overdraft Service.

Special Messages for:
|Gold Line Account Holders|
Your checks, ATM transactions, and everyday debit card purchases will generally be covered up to your available credit limit even if you do not choose to sign-up to Debit Card Overdraft Service. Fees may apply. Subject to credit approval. Note that the Gold Line Account will not advance funds to cover fees or charges assessed by the Bank. This may result in an overdraft on your checking account.
|Savings Overdraft Protection Customers|
Your ATM transactions and everyday debit card purchases will generally not be covered (at the time of the transaction) if you do not sign up for Debit Card Overdraft Service. Your checks and ACH transactions will generally be covered if you link your savings account with your checking account to cover overdrafts if and when they occur. Money is transferred in increments of $50, and, as long as you have not exceeded the maximum number of transfers and if your savings balance can cover the payment and any transfer fees, it will be paid. Conditions, fees and restrictions apply.1
