Bank of the West Commits $1.7 million to Financial Literacy

Bank of the West announced today its continuing partnership with Operation HOPE through a three-year $1.7 million commitment, including cash grants and office space.

A core element of the contribution is support for the HOPE Center, a financial literacy empowerment center co-located with the bank's branch in Oakland. Within the HOPE Center, Operation Hope counselors provide financial literacy classes and one-on-one counseling on homeownership, mortgages and foreclosure, credit and small business development. Since 2005, this co-located Center has served nearly 45,000 individuals

The bank's support will also be directly applied toward programs that benefit the communities in which Bank of the West operates, including the youth-centered Banking on Our Future programs in Portland, Oakland and Denver, as well as financial literacy events and forums. The support will also fund the development of a new Gallup-HOPE Index, a national survey measuring the effectiveness of financial literacy programs on U.S. students.

"Our support for community organizations allows us to reach deeply into the neighborhoods we serve to provide individuals and families with information that can help them move toward economic self-sufficiency" said Rebeca Rangel, community affairs manager at Bank of the West.

Since 2000, Bank of the West has provided a range of support and services to its communities through Operation HOPE programs. Past activities include:

  • Banking on Our Future programs in Oakland, Denver and Portland to reach youth ages 8-24 with a classroom curriculum on money, credit and responsible financial planning
  • The opening of a HOPE Center co-located with a Bank of the West branch in Oakland
  • Support for HOPE Coalition America, offering financial emergency preparedness and disaster recovery
  • Support for financial literacy town halls and forums in Oakland and Denver
  • Employee volunteer participation teaching school children about money at Banking on Our Future events

"We are pleased to work with a financial institution like Bank of the West that understands commitment to community. Through our partnership we have worked side by side to turn underserved communities into healthy ones" said HOPE Founder, Chairman and CEO John Hope Bryant. "It is through partnerships like this that HOPE is able to deliver the financial literacy tools that empower individuals and change lives."
