Cheap Trick, 38 Special and Winner of Rockin' O!maha Band Contest To Perform at Bank of the West Celebrates America July 1

Concert Moves to Dodge Street Side of Memorial Park

Get ready to rock: the Bank of the West Celebrates America free concert and fireworks show on Friday, July 1, 2011, in Memorial Park will feature:

  • Live music by two headliner bands, Cheap Trick and 38 Special;
  • An opening band that has yet to be selected - the public will help decide who it will be;
  • A new stage location on the Dodge Street side of Memorial Park;
  • Bank of the West's five-year partnership with the Food Bank for the Heartland.

"This is the 21st year that Bank of the West Celebrates America will bring the community together for a fantastic evening of music and fireworks in Memorial Park. We are delighted to host two powerhouse bands in Omaha, Cheap Trick and 38 Special," said Robert Dalrymple, Executive Vice President, Bank of the West's Great Plains Division. "We also are excited about our new Rockin' O!maha Band Contest to discover the next big American band. We again will launch Your Vote Rocks and ask the Omaha community and others across the country to help us choose an up-and-coming band to be this year's opening act. We will host a national online contest in which bands from Nebraska and communities across the nation will compete to be chosen to open this year's concert."

Also, this year the stage location will move to the Dodge Street side of Memorial Park for increased viewing by concert-goers. Attendees will have ample space to enjoy the music and fireworks in the park.

"We are looking forward to having our customers and community members join us on July 1 to kick off Fourth of July weekend," said Dalrymple.

Rockin' O!maha Band Contest
Bank of the West Rockin' O!maha Band Contest invites eligible bands from the Omaha area and across the country to compete to be the opening act on stage at the 2011 Bank of the West Celebrates America concert.  The contest will be held on Facebook, at, now through May 31, 2011. The public is invited to recommend their favorite up-and-coming bands on Facebook during that time. The Your Vote Rocks online voting for the best band will be June 1-17, 2011, on Facebook; the winning musical act will be announced in June 2011.

Two Headliner Bands Will Rock the Park

Cheap Trick blends elements of pop, punk and metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable. The group's timeless classics include "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "Dream Police," and the late 80s audience-loving favorite, "The Flame." Cheap Trick also wrote and performed the theme song to Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Since the 1970s, Cheap Trick has given more than 5,000 performances, sold 20 million records, been featured in 29 movie soundtracks and won 40 gold and platinum recording awards. Cheap Trick's most current release, The Latest, released on CD, vinyl and 8-track, has garnered glowing reviews worldwide.

38 Special, after more than three decades together, still performs in more than 100 cities each year. The group's southern rock roots combine with arena rock style for crowd-pleasing performances. "Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up in You," "Second Chance," and "Back Where You Belong" are among 38 Special's smash hits. The band delivers an explosive live set, 38 Special - Live From Texas, with a CD by the same name expected to be released later this year.

Concert Stage Will Move to Dodge Street Side of Memorial Park
New in 2011, the concert stage will move to the Dodge Street side of Memorial Park for enhanced visibility. There will be more locations of food vendors for the convenience of concert attendees. Also new to the venue will be two large screens, both 27 feet wide and 16 feet tall, that will be positioned next to the stage to offer concert-goers close-up views of the bands.

Food Bank for the Heartland Partnership
For the fifth year, Bank of the West is proud to partner with Food Bank for the Heartland, which marks 30 years of feeding the hungry in our community. This summer, the Food Bank will move to a larger facility in order to serve more people in need. Concert-goers are encouraged to make free-will cash donations to the Food Bank for the Heartland at Memorial Park the night of the concert. Bank of the West will again sell commemorative Celebrates America plush bears with all the profits going to the Food Bank. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of food and beverages at the event will be donated to Food Bank for the Heartland.

Bank of the West Celebrates America will begin with the National Anthem at 6 p.m. The winner of the Bank of the West Rockin' O!maha Band Contest will be the opening act, followed by 38 Special and then Cheap Trick. The evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks finale at 10 p.m. Bank of the West Celebrates America is hosted in cooperation with the City of Omaha. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend.
