Gilles Karpowicz Gilles Karpowicz Executive Vice President Director of Audit and Inspection

Gilles Karpowicz is Executive Vice President and Director of Audit & Inspection at Bank of the West; he was appointed in 2009. He is a member of the bank’s Executive Management Committee.

Karpowicz is responsible for directing a comprehensive risk-based program that provides independent evaluations of the adequacy and effectiveness of the Bank’s risk management, internal controls, credit quality, security, and governance processes.

Karpowicz has been with the bank and its holding company, BancWest Corporation, since 2003. Immediately prior to his current position, Karpowicz was head of the bank’s Basel II Program Management Office within the Risk Management Division and was Risk Manager for BancWest Corporation.

Karpowicz began his banking career with Banque Nationale de Paris, now BNP Paribas, in 1988. He spent 15 years with BNP Paribas, including five as the team leader for Management Audit in the Inspection Générale Group in Paris. Over a ten year period Karpowicz held several positions with BNP Canada, including Head of Structured Finance Group; Chief Credit Officer and Relationship Manager and Credit Administrator in Commercial Banking.

Karpowicz received his M.S. in Corporate and Investment Finance from Sherbrooke University in Quebec, Canada and B.A. from the Business School at Ecole Supérieure de Commerce et de Management (ESCEM) in France.
